Why did genes gang up in cells?

Often a single chemical reaction is not sufficient to generate a useful end-product. For example, often whole sets of enzymes are needed in succession to catalyze a starting molecule to a useful end-product through cooperation in intermediate stages. Each enzyme is only made by a single gene, creating an advantage for "survival machines" that can hold and protect multiple genes.
