Eventually, in 2015, with rising controversy and debate, Sarafem's legitimacy as a helpful drug in treating PMDD was debunked, with studies saying that taking the drug would cause more harm than good. This discontinuation was also due in part to the reasoning for Sarafem's existence as a drug. Sarafem only ever came onto the market to renew the patent for Prozac.
