WID Data Collection and Harmonization Methodology

The World Inequality Database (WID) constructs its data series by systematically combining and harmonizing information from a wide range of sources. This includes national accounts, household surveys, tax data (including income and inheritance records), and wealth rankings. A key part of the methodology involves making explicit adjustments to ensure consistency across countries and over time, addressing issues like tax evasion and the under-reporting of top incomes and wealth, which are often missed in standard surveys.
