The first distinct Women's Studies program was established in 1970 at San Diego State University. In the 1970s, as programs grew at Universities across the United States the focus was establishing Women's Studies as a legitimate academic field with autonomous programs. This focus shifted in the 1980s to mainstreaming Women's Studies by establishing core curriculums across university programs and incorporating a feminist scholarship analytical lens within different academic disicplines.

Men’s studies examines the construction of gender with the experiences of men centered, largely focusing on the concept of masculinity.

Men’s studies

Queer studies, formerly called “gay and lesbian studies” and sometimes now called LGBT studies, focuses on the construction of sexuality and gender identities, centering queerness. By centering queerness, the theories of this field are not confined to gender and sexuality alone, although that is the focus, but can instead be applied to all socially constructed norms.
