Case Study

A Farmer's Two-Year Plan

A farmer has a very successful harvest this year, yielding 100 bushels of wheat. She expects a poor harvest next year, yielding only 20 bushels. She is considering two plans for her consumption over the two-year period:

  • Plan A: Consume all 100 bushels this year and the 20 bushels next year.
  • Plan B: Consume 60 bushels this year (saving 40) and then consume the saved 40 plus the new 20 (a total of 60 bushels) next year.

Assuming the farmer's goal is to maximize her total satisfaction from consumption over the two-year period, which plan is she more likely to prefer? Justify your choice by analyzing how the satisfaction gained from consuming an additional bushel of wheat might differ when she has a lot versus when she has very little.
