Abu Hafs Umar al-Haddad of Nishapur is remembered in Kashf al-Mahjub as a foremost teacher of futuwwa (spiritual chivalry, javanmardi). Though he is said to have known no Arabic, when he came to the Shuniziyya mosque in Baghdad he answered the assembled masters — Junayd among them — in fluent Arabic. When they asked him directly, 'What is futuwwa?' (ما الفتوة؟), his reply frames chivalry not as a claim to be honored but as an ethic of self-effacing fairness: dealing justly and generously with others while demanding no such treatment in return. This exchange is a touchstone for how the Sufi tradition connects Abu Hafs specifically to the doctrine of futuwwa.
