Abu Uthman Sa'id ibn Isma'il al-Hiri recounts that from childhood his heart persistently sought a hidden reality (haqiqa) and felt aversion toward the people of mere outward observance (ahl-i zahir). He held with certainty that beyond the outward form of the law which the common people follow, the shariah also possesses an inner secret (sirr). This early conviction frames his later discipleship under Yahya ibn Mu'adh, Shah Shuja al-Kirmani, and Abu Hafs, and exemplifies the Sufi principle that religious practice carries an esoteric dimension underlying its exoteric form.
