Accounting for Durable Goods: Consumption vs. Investment

In national income accounts, household spending on long-lasting durable goods, such as cars or appliances, is classified entirely as consumption (C). However, from an economic perspective, this type of expenditure is considered more akin to an investment. This is because durable goods provide a stream of services and value over a long period, much like a firm's investment in machinery.
