Adopting Anonymity for Sensitive Topics
In their research across three Q&A forums, Yahoo Answers, Quora, and Zhihu, Guo and Caine observed that users, given the option to select their degree of identity exposure, showed an increased likelihood of both anonymously asking about and participating in discussions on sensitive topics such as health, sex, death, and abuse. Based on these findings, Guo and Caine suggest that, when appropriate, online communities could offer users the option to adopt anonymity when engaging in sensitive topics (context-specific anonymity) to encourage engagement and overcome stigmatization, judgment, or other psychological barriers.
