Adverse Public Health Implications of School-Based Deworming Programs

Intervention strategies that include school-based deworming programs may not have a significant impact on the morbidity of hookworm as compared to other STH infections. Heavy-intensity hookworm infections are prevalent within adult and child populations, so school-based programs would not alter hookworm transmission within the community. These public health measures are not expected to affect preschool aged children or pregnant women. Furthermore, a single dose of mebendazole (primary BZAs) has moderate efficacy against hookworm. Additionally, efficacy of mebendazole can diminish with continued, long-term use which raises alarm about emergence of BZA resistance.
