Advising a National Statistics Agency on Inequality Measurement

A national statistics agency is preparing its annual report on income distribution for a country with over 50 million households. The agency is considering two different computational approaches to generate a single summary statistic for inequality.

Method A involves calculating the average difference in income across every possible pair of households in the entire population. Method B involves plotting a cumulative distribution curve and calculating a ratio of the areas on the graph.

The agency has a very tight deadline and limited computational resources. Method A is known to be more computationally intensive but provides a more precise result. Method B is computationally faster but is considered a very close approximation.

As an economic consultant, write a recommendation to the agency. Justify which method they should use for their report, evaluating the trade-offs between precision and practicality in this specific context.
