Competing views of aesthetics and functionality in workplace design

A functionalist view treats aesthetic form and practical function as mutually connected in the design of objects. A contrasting view allows aesthetics and function to coexist without requiring one to determine the other; under aesthetic duality, an object may be functional while its aesthetic value remains independent of how much function it serves. In workplace design, aesthetic qualities may also be valued for supporting employees' sense of dignity.
