Affective processes in current use and early indications of alcohol problems
A study investigated the relationship between negative urgency (acting impulsively in response to negative emotions) and "drinking to cope" behaviors in college students. The findings revealed that higher levels of negative urgency predicted greater engagement in coping-driven drinking at two different time points. Additionally, changes in negative urgency over time corresponded to changes in "drinking to cope" behaviors. These results suggest that the influence of negative emotions on impulsive behaviors plays a significant role in alcohol use.
