Air Pollution: Dhaka City (Bangladesh) (Pre-COVID-19)

Researchers selected Dhaka City, Bangladesh to study how air pollution may have changed as a result of COVID-19. Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak:

  • Average PM2.5 levels (80 μg/m3) were 5x higher than the Bangladeshi standard and 8x higher than the WHO standard
  • Air pollution was severe enough to cause various public health problems and accounted for an estimated 8.8 million premature deaths per year
  • Prior to COVID-19 lockdown (March 8 - March 25, 2020) average PM2.5 levels were 101.8 μg/m3, average O3 levels were 185.13 μg/m3, average CO levels were 13.96 μg/m3, average SO2 levels were 243.05 μg/m3, and average NO2 levels were 500.97 μg/m3. AQI values were recorded as high as 180
