Airport Location Policy Evaluation

A city government is deciding between two locations for a new international airport.

  • Location A: Situated in an affluent, politically well-connected suburb. This location is less disruptive to residents but is projected to be 20% less economically efficient over its lifetime due to higher construction costs and less optimal flight paths.
  • Location B: Situated in a low-income, less politically organized community. This location is the most economically efficient option but would require the displacement of hundreds of families.

As a policy advisor, you are asked to write a recommendation. Evaluate both options, considering the principles of economic efficiency and fairness. In your response, discuss which outcome might result from political favoritism and propose a course of action for the government, justifying the trade-offs involved.
