Abu Ali al-Rudbari distinguishes two spiritual types. The seeker (murid) is one who wills nothing for himself except what God has already willed for him; the sought (murad) is one who wills nothing from the two worlds except God alone. To become a true seeker, one must be content with God's will and abandon one's own willing; likewise the lover (muhibb) must relinquish personal desire in order to become sought. Because of this, contentment (rida) is counted among the stations of the beginners on the Sufi path.

از جوانمردان متصوفه بود و سرهنگان ایشان و از ابنای ملوک بود. اندر فنون معاملات شأنی عظیم داشت. و وی را آیات و مناقب بسیار است و کلام لطیف اندر دقایق این طریقت.
از وی می آید که گفت: «المرید لایرید لنفسه إلا ما أراد الله له و المراد لا یرید من الکونین شیئا غیره.» مرید آن بود که هیچ چیز نخواهد مر خود را الا آن که حق تعالی وی را خواسته باشد و مراد آن که هیچ چیز نخواهد از کونین به جز حق، تعالی. پس راضی به ارادت حق، تارک ارادت باید تا وی مرید باشد و محب را خود ارادت نباید تا مراد باشد. آن که حق را خواهد جز آن نخواهد که او خواهد و آن که حق ورا خواهد وی جز حق را نخواهد. پس رضا از مقامات ابتدا بود و محبت از احوال انتها. و نسبت مقامات به تحقیق عبودیت است و مشرب درجات به تأیید ربوبیت. و چون چنین باشد مرید به خود قایم بود و مراد به حق قایم بود. والله اعلم.

And among them: Shaykh Mahmud, the mine of generosity, Abu Ali Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Qasim al-Rudbari, may Allah be pleased with him.
He was among the chivalrous ones (javanmardan) of the Sufis and their captains, and he was of the sons of kings. In the various arts of spiritual conduct (mu'amalat) he held a mighty rank. He has many signs and virtues, and subtle discourse concerning the fine points of this Path.
It is related from him that he said: 'The disciple (murid) does not desire for himself anything except what Allah has desired for him, and the desired one (murad) desires nothing of the two worlds other than Him.' The murid is the one who desires nothing for himself save what God Most High has desired for him, and the murad is the one who desires nothing of the two worlds except God, exalted be He. So the one content with God's will must abandon his own will in order to be a murid, and the lover need have no will of his own in order to be a murad. He who desires God desires only what God desires, and he whom God desires desires nothing but God. Thus contentment (rida) is among the stations (maqamat) of the beginning, and love (mahabbat) is among the states (ahwal) of the end. The attribution of the stations is to the realization of servanthood (ubudiyyat), and the drinking-place of the degrees is to the support of lordship (rububiyyat). And when this is so, the murid is subsisting through himself, and the murad is subsisting through God. And God knows best.
