Alexithymia and AUD
Individuals with alexithymia often experience difficulty identifying or describing their emotions, leading to feelings of isolation and emotional disconnection from others. Some individuals use alcohol as a coping mechanism to combat these feelings, reporting that drinking helps them feel more in tune with their emotions and makes it easier to communicate feelings to others. This pattern of self-medication increases the risk of developing alcohol use disorder (AUD).
