Analyzing a Cross-Country Economic Comparison

A political leader claims, "Our nation's economy, with a total output valued at $500 billion, is clearly superior to our neighbor's, whose output is valued at only $300 billion. We are unequivocally the more productive and prosperous nation." An economist points out that, on average, goods and services in the first nation are 50% more expensive than in the neighboring nation. Analyze the political leader's claim. In your analysis, explain the fundamental flaw in their reasoning and describe the general principle of the calculation that would be needed to make a more meaningful comparison of the two nations' actual economic production.
