Analyzing a System Shift

Consider a neighborhood where residents have a long-standing, informal agreement to keep their front lawns tidy. For years, this norm is upheld, creating a stable, well-kept appearance throughout the area. One year, a new family moves in and, due to personal circumstances, is unable to maintain their lawn. Shortly after, a few neighboring households also begin to neglect their lawn care. Within a few months, the entire neighborhood's aesthetic has shifted to one of general untidiness, which then becomes the new, persistent norm.

Using the physical analogy of a ball on a hill, analyze this scenario. Your analysis should identify the components of the scenario that correspond to the hilltop (unstable equilibrium), the small nudge that disrupts the system, and the new valley (stable equilibrium) the system settles into.
