Case Study

Analyzing an Efficient Allocation

A producer chooses between free time and producing a good. The total output is shared between the producer and a second individual. The curve representing all allocations where it is impossible to make one person better off without making the other worse off is plotted with the producer's free time on the horizontal axis and their consumption on the vertical axis. Consider Point A on this curve, which corresponds to the producer having 16 hours of free time and consuming 60 units of the good. At this specific allocation, the second individual receives 30 units of the good. Based on the properties of this curve, analyze whether it is possible to create a new allocation where the producer still has 16 hours of free time, but the second individual receives 35 units of the good. Explain your reasoning.
