Analyzing Competing Factors in Resource Cooperation

Imagine two farming communities, both dependent on a single, shared river for irrigation.

  • Community A has a long history of inter-family cooperation and strong social bonds, but land ownership is highly concentrated, with a few wealthy families controlling most of the farmland.
  • Community B is composed of recent settlers from different regions with no shared history, but all farmers own similarly sized plots of land.

Analyze the potential for successful, long-term cooperation over water usage in each community. In your analysis, identify the key factor that would promote cooperation and the key factor that would hinder it for each community, explaining the reasoning behind your assessment.
