Short Answer

Analyzing Economic Shares Over Time

An economist is analyzing how the share of a country's manufacturing output relative to its total economic output has changed over a 30-year period. During this time, the general price level has quadrupled. The economist calculates the share for each year by dividing the manufacturing output value (at that year's prices) by the total economic output value (also at that year's prices). Explain why this method produces a meaningful comparison over time, despite the significant change in the price level.
