Analyzing Growth at a Manufacturing Firm

A manufacturing firm, 'Precision Parts Co.', has a strict policy to maintain product quality through supervision. Each shop-floor supervisor can effectively manage a maximum of 10 assembly-line workers. The firm started with 10 workers, all managed directly by the owner. As it expanded to 100 workers, it hired 10 supervisors. Now, it plans to expand to 500 workers. To maintain the same level of oversight, the 50 new supervisors required will be managed by a new layer of 5 plant managers. Analyze this growth pattern and explain why the firm's average cost per part produced is likely to increase after the expansion to 500 workers, even if the wages for all employee types remain the same.
