Case Study

Analyzing Household Choices

Consider two households, both with the same potential hourly wage and the same number of available hours per day. Household A chooses to have both adults work long hours. They enjoy a high level of consumption, with a large house, new cars, and frequent expensive vacations, but have very little time for rest or hobbies. Household B chooses to have both adults work part-time. Their consumption is lower—they have a smaller home, older cars, and take modest vacations—but they have significant time for relaxation, family activities, and personal interests. From an economic standpoint, analyze why Household B's choice is not inherently less rational than Household A's. Your explanation should focus on the fundamental trade-off these households are making.
