Analyzing Neighborly Interactions

Imagine two neighbors, Alex and Ben. Last month, Alex watched Ben's dog for a weekend while Ben was away. This month, when Alex's car broke down, Ben gave Alex a ride to work every day until it was fixed. However, last night, Alex hosted a very loud party that kept Ben awake. Today, Ben ignored Alex's friendly greeting. Using your understanding of social preferences, explain how both of Ben's actions (giving rides and ignoring the greeting) can be understood as examples of the same underlying principle.
