Analyzing Parallel Constraints in Logistics

At a regional distribution center, a logistics coordinator is defining safe storage boundaries for two temperature-sensitive inventory items. They model these storage conditions using a system of two linear inequalities. Because of identical rate changes, the boundary lines of these two inequalities are parallel.

To ensure proper inventory management, explain the mathematical criteria for when this system of parallel boundaries will actually yield a valid storage solution. In your response, recall and address the following:

  1. Does the fact that the boundary lines are parallel automatically mean there is no possible storage solution? Explain why or why not in terms of what defines a system's solution.
  2. How does the direction of the shaded regions (the inequalities' direction) affect whether a common solution exists?
  3. If a solution does exist, how does the final, overall solution region relate to the individual boundaries of the two inequalities?
