Short Answer

Analyzing Production Decisions with External Effects

A firm develops a new, quieter jet engine. The firm's decision on how many engines to produce is based on its manufacturing costs and the price it can sell them for. However, the quieter engines also reduce noise pollution for communities living near airports. In this context, distinguish between the private cost and the social cost of producing one more of the old, noisier engines. Based on this distinction, explain why the firm, acting on its own, might produce a quantity of new, quieter engines that is different from the socially optimal quantity.
