Analyzing Resource Reallocations

Consider two farmers, Maria and Sam, who share a plot of land. Initially (Allocation A), they each harvest 10 bushels of wheat. Two new farming techniques are proposed. With the first technique (Allocation B), Maria harvests 12 bushels and Sam harvests 11 bushels. With the second technique (Allocation C), Maria harvests 20 bushels and Sam harvests 8 bushels. Assume each farmer's only goal is to maximize their own harvest.

In your response, analyze the proposed moves from Allocation A to B, and from Allocation A to C.

  1. Identify which of the proposed changes, if any, represents a Pareto improvement over the initial situation.
  2. Explain your reasoning using the definition of a Pareto improvement.
  3. Explain why the other proposed change does not qualify as a Pareto improvement, even though it results in a larger total harvest.
