Analyzing the Long-Term Shift in Work-Leisure Balance

Economic data from one developed nation shows a significant shift in how an average person allocates their lifetime hours. In 1880, estimated lifetime hours spent in leisure were only about one-quarter of the hours spent working. By 1995, leisure hours had grown to exceed work hours. Projections suggest that by 2040, lifetime leisure hours could be triple the number of work hours. Analyze the primary microeconomic forces that could drive such a dramatic, long-term trend.
