Analyzing the Producer's Perspective on an Externality Tax

A government imposes a per-unit tax on a factory to account for the pollution it generates. A factory manager argues, 'This tax is unfair. It punishes us by increasing our production costs, but our actual process for making each item hasn't changed.' An economist replies, 'It's more helpful to think of it as the government reducing the price you get for your product.' Analyze the economist's perspective. Explain why viewing the tax as a reduction in the received price leads the factory to decrease its output to a more socially desirable level.
