Anatomy of a Taste Bud
Taste buds are sensory structures embedded within the epithelium of the tongue's surface. A typical taste bud is an onion-shaped collection of taste receptor cells. This structure opens to the surface through an aperture known as the taste pore, allowing it to interact with dissolved substances. At the base of the taste bud, nerve fibers connect to the receptor cells to transmit gustatory signals to the brain. Microscopic views of tongue tissue show these taste buds located within the papillae, which are the small projections covering the tongue.
