Anatomy of a Taste Bud

Taste buds are specialized sensory structures embedded within the tongue's epithelial surface. Microscopically, a typical taste bud resembles an onion and consists of a cluster of taste receptor cells. These cells interface with dissolved substances through an opening at the surface known as the taste pore. Beneath the receptor cells, nerve fibers are attached to transmit gustatory information to the brain. These structures are typically found within papillae, which are the small bumps covering the human tongue.
