Angela's Improved Welfare at Allocation N

Despite producing less grain and receiving zero economic rent at allocation N, Angela's welfare is significantly improved by the new law. Her utility is higher because, while her wage remains the same, she gains more free time. This increase in utility can be quantified: the new legislation elevates her reservation indifference curve from IC2 to IC_N, which is equivalent to a welfare gain of seven bushels of grain. This 7-bushel gain is represented graphically by the vertical distance between her new allocation at point N and her original reservation indifference curve, IC2.
