Anil's Altruistic Best Response if Bala Chooses IPC

This example demonstrates how to find Anil's best response when he has altruistic preferences and Bala chooses Integrated Pest Control (IPC). When Bala plays IPC, Anil must compare his two possible outcomes. If he also chooses IPC, the allocation is (I,I), corresponding to the point (3,3) on the graph with its associated payoffs. If he chooses Toxic Tide (T), the allocation is (T,I), corresponding to the point (4,1). By observing the graph of Anil's altruistic preferences, it is clear that the point (3,3) lies on a higher indifference curve than the point (4,1). Since Anil's utility increases on curves further from the origin, he prefers the (I,I) outcome. Therefore, his best response is to choose IPC.
