Annihilation of the Self and the Veil of Illusion in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 4, Poem 13)

This poem articulates the fundamental Sufi concept of fana (annihilation of the self). Attar suggests that individual identities and distinctions—represented by 'you' and 'I'—are fundamentally illusory. When the 'veil of illusion' (the false perception of a dualistic reality) is lifted, individual ego disappears, revealing that the only true, enduring reality is the Divine ('He remains and He').
