The authors screened 177 individuals using nucleic acid testing (NAT). IgM and IgG antibodies from commercial serum kits were evaluated against SARS-CoV-2 nucleoprotein (N) and spike (S) proteins. Individuals were grouped into classifications based on COVID-19 severity NAT and IgM/ IgG response for a study sample of 177 participants: 63 healthy contacts of COVID-19 cases, 63 asymptomatic cases, and 51 mild cases. The authors also evaluated neutralizing antibody responses.

S1 and N IgM/IgG responses showed in asymptomatic individuals 7 days post-exposure and were greatest 17-25 days post-exposure. S1 IgM and IgG responses and titers of neutralizing antibodies disappeared after 2 months post-exposure. S1 IgM antibody responses showed in mild individuals after 1 day of symptom onset, increasing until 29 days after onset. Mild patients experience greater N-specific responses for IgM/IgG, remaining over 65 days. 63.5% asymptomatic cases and 19% of healthy individuals induced titers of neutralizing antibodies (mean NT50 1:24 and 1:13). The neutralizing antibody response among asymptomatic individuals occurred after 7 day post-exposure, and peaked from 10-25 days. 88.2% of mild cases induced titers (mean NT50 1:269), occurring 1 day following symptom onset, and peaked at 22 days.

The authors found that IgM/IgG antibodies couldn't differentiate between asymptomatic or mild individuals, which they contribute to potential infectiousness of asymptomatic individuals. Titers of neutralizing antibodies were low among asymptomatic cases and rapidly deteriorated following a peak at 10-25 days post-exposure, compared to mild cases which peaked at 22 days and lasted for over 65.
