Antoine Augustin Cournot (1801-1877)

Antoine Augustin Cournot (1801-1877) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and economist who is considered a pioneer of mathematical economics. [11, 15] His 1838 book, 'Researches into the Mathematical Principles of the Theory of Wealth', introduced the use of functions and probability in economic analysis. In this work, he was the first to formulate and graphically represent supply and demand as a function of price, predating Alfred Marshall's work on the subject by decades. [15] His model of duopoly introduced concepts that are now known as the Nash equilibrium and reaction functions. [15]
