William Nordhaus
William Nordhaus is an American economist renowned for his work on the economics of climate change, for which he was a co-recipient of the 2018 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He is a pioneer in developing integrated assessment models (IAMs), such as his Dynamic Integrated Climate-Economy (DICE) model, which integrate insights from economics and physical sciences to analyze climate change policies. Nordhaus is also known for his critique of the 2006 Stern Review, where he argued against its use of a very low discount rate, and for his research questioning the accuracy of standard economic growth measurements, using the history of lighting as a key example.

Analyzing a Price Surge
A country is experiencing a rapid increase in the price of housing, making it difficult for many people to afford a home. A politician suggests that the problem is 'corporate greed' and proposes a law to cap all housing prices. From the perspective of a professional who analyzes economic behavior and trends, what would be the most appropriate initial action to understand this situation?
A country's government reports that the national unemployment rate has risen significantly. A professional who studies economic trends is hired to advise on the situation. Which of the following actions best represents the core analytical task this professional would perform to understand the problem?
A city is experiencing severe traffic congestion. Four professionals offer their initial analysis of the problem. Which statement best represents the perspective of an economist?
Match the economic issue with the primary analytical approach a professional who studies the economy would use to understand it.

The Paradox of Economic Success
A city government is considering several policies to reduce air pollution caused by traffic. From the perspective of a specialist studying the economic impacts of environmental policies, which of the following proposals best represents a market-based approach to solve this problem?
Evaluating Environmental Policies in a Developing Economy
A small bakery operates in a large, competitive market where the established price for a standard loaf of bread is €2.35. The bakery can sell as many loaves as it can produce at this price. If the bakery owner decides to set their price at €2.45 per loaf, what is the most likely outcome for their sales of this bread?
The Economic Rationale for Pollution Levels
A government proposes a new regulation that requires factories to install expensive filtration systems to reduce pollutants discharged into a river. A specialist in the economic impacts of environmental policy is tasked with analyzing this proposal. Which of the following best describes the fundamental trade-off they would evaluate?
From the perspective of a specialist studying the economic impacts of environmental policy, the ideal outcome of any regulation is the complete elimination of the targeted pollutant.
Evaluating the Full Cost of a New Factory
A government is evaluating a proposal to ban a widely-used pesticide that has been shown to harm local bee populations, which are crucial for pollinating nearby fruit farms. However, the pesticide is inexpensive and significantly increases crop yields for the farmers who use it. From the perspective of a specialist studying the economic impacts of environmental policy, which of the following best frames the central question for determining if the ban is economically sound?
Match each type of environmental policy instrument with its corresponding description of how it functions.

A political leader argues against a new government program designed to redistribute wealth to achieve 'social justice.' The leader claims that such central planning is fundamentally flawed because no single entity can possess the vast, dispersed knowledge necessary to organize a complex economy effectively, and that such attempts ultimately undermine individual liberty. This argument strongly reflects the core principles of:

A government policy that provides a universal basic income to all citizens, funded by progressive taxation to reduce inequality, is consistent with the economic principles of Friedrich Hayek.
A small, isolated community discovers a new, highly efficient farming technique that doubles its food production. An observer predicts that this technological breakthrough will not lead to a long-term improvement in the community's average standard of living. Instead, they argue, any temporary surplus will be consumed by a growing population, eventually returning the community to its original state of bare subsistence. This pessimistic outlook is most consistent with the core arguments of which economic thinker?
