Anxiety from Ego's Failure to Mediate Conflict

According to Freud, anxiety is a state of distress that arises from the ego's inability to effectively mediate the conflicting demands of the id and the superego. This anxiety serves as a signal that the ego is being overwhelmed, which in turn triggers the use of defense mechanisms to restore psychological balance.
