AR usage bolstered daily and independence skills, as well as learning, for students with disabilities. For students with low vision, AR technology was used as a supporting assisted reading tool, which could potentially enhance their vision. The technology also showed promise in advancing vocabulary knowledge and spatial recognition.

By combining traditional teaching methods with augmented reality (AR), students are able to better visualize processes through their interaction between the real and digital worlds. For example, AR can superimpose real world objects with information boxes and virtual items. Beyond sight, AR can also involve the sense of touch, hearing, and smell. Some studies show that AR significantly affects students’ problem solving, motivation, and learning outcomes.

AR Benefits for Special Education

- For students with visual impairments, AR could be used as a supporting tool and helped researchers understand visual perception among those with low vision.
- Among students with intellectual disabilities, the technology improved their navigation skills, mathematical skills, daily and independence skills, and general knowledge; AR was also researched to be an effective working aid tool and could be useful in identifying possible allergens.
- For students with autism, AR enhanced their science vocabulary knowledge, decision making skills, and social skills.
- Students with cognitive disorders had positive developments in perception and vocational job skills.
- In terms of general and vocational education for students with disabilities, AR was found to improve their academic skills, boost student motivation, and enhance their competitiveness in the job market.
- At present, there have been no studies involving students with Down syndrome, dyslexia, or deafness.
