Argentina's Fiscal Consolidation Under the 1990s Currency Board

As a direct consequence of its 1990s currency board and limited ability to borrow from abroad, the Argentine government was compelled to undertake significant fiscal consolidation. This policy shift successfully reversed a long-standing trend of primary deficits. The fiscal adjustment was so substantial that the primary deficit was not only eliminated but transformed into a primary surplus, where government revenues exceeded non-interest expenditures.
