Arguments for Criminology as an Independent Discipline

Proponents of classifying Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJ) as an independent discipline directly under the social sciences cite several trends of divergence from sociology. For example, between 1999 and 2009, CCJ programs granted more bachelor's and advanced degrees overall, and at a faster rate, than sociology programs. Furthermore, the majority (88%) of top CCJ programs are housed in their own independent departments, and CCJ graduates produce more scholarly articles than their sociology counterparts.
