Attachment Theory

Developed by John Bowlby, attachment theory centers on the "affectional bond or tie that an infant forms with the mother." According to Bowlby, the formation of this bond with a primary caregiver is a prerequisite for healthy social and emotional development. He also posited that this attachment is a powerful force that endures throughout a person's life.
