Case Study

Based on the case context, explain which of the three criteria for scientific interestingness are met by this proposed research question, and which are not met. Justify your evaluation for each criterion.

Case context: A psychologist plans to study whether a new therapeutic writing exercise reduces stress in college students. The psychologist is already certain of the positive outcome based on personal experience, and the technique is widely popular. However, no academic studies have ever evaluated this exercise, and proving its effectiveness would help university counseling centers design better stress-management workshops.

Question: Based on the case context, explain which of the three criteria for scientific interestingness are met by this proposed research question, and which are not met. Justify your evaluation for each criterion.

Sample answer: Based on the criteria for scientific interestingness: 1) The criterion of the answer being in doubt is NOT met, because the psychologist is already certain of the outcome. 2) The criterion of filling a gap in existing literature IS met, because no academic studies have evaluated this exercise. 3) The criterion of having important practical implications IS met, because the findings would help counseling centers improve their workshops.

Key points:

  • Identifies that the answer is not in doubt (criterion not met)
  • Identifies that the study fills a gap in the literature (criterion met)
  • Identifies that the study has practical implications (criterion met)

Rubric: Ensure the student evaluates all three criteria: 1) Recognizes that 'answer in doubt' is not met due to the researcher's certainty. 2) Recognizes that 'filling a gap' is met because there is no prior academic research. 3) Recognizes that 'practical implications' is met because of the utility for university counseling centers.
