Basilar membrane of the organ of Corti

The basilar membrane is the base structure of the organ of Corti. It is a flexible membrane that seperates the scala tympani from the scala media. It vibrates in responce to sound (the ripples in fluid of the scala vestibuli). The basilar membrane is wider at the apex than the base, and different areas of the membrane have stronger responces to different sound frequencies. The base is narrow and stiff, while the apex is wide and flexible.

  • high frequencies have the largest effect at the base
  • low frequencies have largest effect at the apex
