According to Hesiod's "Theogony", Gaia or Ge (Earth) created an equal, Uranus (Sky), whom she wed; they produced the Cyclopes, the Hecatonchires, and the 12 Titans.

Tartarus (a place deep within the depths of earth) and Erebus (the gloom and darkness associated with Tartarus). Later Erebus is often equated to Tartarus.

The ancient poet Hesiod is believed to be the first literary source of Greek creation myths. "Theogony" gives a general overview, while "Works and Days" goes into greater detail of the creation. Hesiod speaks of Chaos, not a being per se, but a void from which everything emerged.
