According to Hesiod the Cyclopes are the ones who created and presented to Zeus the lightning bolt we are accustomed to seeing. Brontes (Thunder), Steropes (Lightning), and Arges (Bright); they were mighty and skillful and had only one eye in the center of their foreheads, and are likened to gods in most respects (Theogony, 126-156)

"Great and unspeakably violent", Cottus, Briareus, and Gyes had 100 arms and 50 heads each; they were terrible and hated by their father from the time they were born (Hesiod, Theogony, 147-156)
