Comorbidity of Borderline Personality Disorder and Substance Use Disorders

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is the most commonly diagnosed personality disorder in clinical settings. Studies observing the comorbid nature of BPD and substance use disorders (SUDs) have shown that more than half of patients diagnosed with BPD are also diagnosed with an SUD, particularly alcohol dependence or drug use disorders. Furthermore, heritable traits often associated with SUDs are also relevant to BPD.
