It has been shown that there is an overlap between personality disorder and substance use disorder criteria. This significantly raises the possibility of the comorbid nature of the two disorders. In looking for this comorbid nature, it was found that there can be substance-induced personality symptoms, however, it was determined that a change in personality disorder symptoms was not associated with recovery from SUDs.

There are certain types of alcohol dependences that are often associated with Antisocial Personality disorder. The concept of a "Broad Band" diagnosis of distributions applies, mostly to a particular population of individuals with SUDs. In studies observing treatment for Substance use disorder and antisocial personality disorder, it was shown that men with antisocial personality disorder used SA treatment services far more then those without antisocial personality disorder.

Borderline Personality disorder, BPD, is the most commonly diagnosed disorder clinically. Studies observing the comorbid nature between BPD and SUD have shown that more than half of the patients diagnosed with BPD have also been diagnosed with other SUDs, particularly Alcohol Dependence disorder and drug use disorder. Heritable traits that are often seen with SUDs are also relevant to BPDs.
