Case Study

Calculating Optimal Consumption

A student has a weekly budget of $60 to spend on two goods: digital movie rentals (M) and cups of coffee (C). The price of a movie rental is $5, and the price of a cup of coffee is $2. The student's satisfaction from consuming these goods can be represented by the function U(M, C) = M * C. To maximize their satisfaction, the student must find the combination of movies and coffee where the rate at which they are willing to trade one good for the other exactly equals the rate at which the market allows them to trade. Calculate the optimal number of movie rentals and cups of coffee the student should purchase.
