Calculating the Cost of a Fixed-Quantity Basket for CPI

A core step in constructing the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is to calculate the total cost of a representative basket of goods over time. This process begins by selecting a base year. Crucially, the quantities of the items within the basket are held constant at the base year level, while the prices of these items are tracked as they change from year to year. This method isolates the effect of price changes on the basket's total cost.
